The professors Jürgen Schmidt and Jens Denecke teach at the universities of Karlsruhe (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology) and Kaiserslautern as well as the University of Applied Science in Karlsruhe.Professor Schmidt teaches process and plant safety since 2002. The lecture is divided into six modules. It offers the students detailed insight into the principles of safety technology and forms the „Technical Safety Mind Set“ – the basis to solve every safety-related tasks in the industry.
In addition, the theoretical principals are deepened practically in an excursion. The students can expand their theoretical knowledge on the basis of a real-life example and gain insight into industry-typical protection concepts.
LECTURE 1: RISK MANAGEMENT
The students learn how to classify danger based on a technical risk assessment and to evaluate risks quantitatively and qualitatively (HAZOP/PAAG, QRA). Therefor they develop a plant safety concept and evaluate it using the Hazardous Substances Ordinance (Layer of Protection).
LECTURE 2: HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES AND CHEMICAL REACTIONS
The impact of toxic substances, their classification and marketing are essential teaching contents (CLP, REACH, Chemicals Act, Ordinance on Hazardous Substances). Furthermore the assessment of exothermal chemical reactions and the experimental methods to determine the exothermy are described (Adiabatic Calorimetry, DSC).
LECTURE 3: SAFETY DEVICES, PRESSURE RELIEF AND RETENTION SYSTEMS
Types of constructions and application areas of safety devices as well as features and characteristics of safety valves are on focus (safety valves, rupture discs, breathing valves, single/two-phase flow). Retention Systems like cyclone and gravity separators as well as emergency coolings and stopping systems are evaluated (separators, cyclons, catch drums, quench tanks).
LECTURE 4: DISPERSION CALCULATION AND PLC DEVICES
The safe dispersion of pollutants and the evaluation of explosions in close range are developed on examples (toxic concentration thresholds IDLH, ERPG, AEGL). The classification of PLC devices and PLC interlook systems and modern PLC based protection concepts are the topic of this module (SIL, common cause failure).
LECTURE 5: EXPLOSION PROTECTION AND ELECTROSTATIC
Explosion protection includes the demonstration of causes and protective measures with a focus on electrostatic charge (UEG, OEG, forms of discharge).
LECTURE 6: EXCURSION
All safety measures evaluated and sized in theory are to be studies in practice in a Seveso III regulated plant of a chemical company.
