Improvement of Security during Inspection and Maintenance

Domino effects are incidents, e.g. explosions, fires or wreckage flights, that affect neighbouring plants. So far, no human errors have been considered which occur due to confusion of plants or plant components.

A wrong pipe that is accidentally opened in a pipe bridge – as in the harbour near Ludwigshafen in October 2016. Or in gas, electricity or telecommunications networks in the public space. Every year, around 100 000 incidents with a loss amount of more than billion euros occur.

CeSIS develops new protection concepts to protect neighbouring plants against third-party incidents.

Approach (excerpt)

  • Analysis of vulnerabilities in today’s mostly organisational measures during inspection and maintenance work.
  • Analysis of plant security risks in a real plant environment of chemistry, petrochemistry and of gas grids.
  • Investigation of causes that lead to third-party incidents to avoid these vulnerabilities with new concepts.
  • Planning, selection and definition of measures for prevention, detection, response.
